Description

The year 1968 has assumed iconic status in the history of post-war Europe and America. It stands as the fulcrum of a period of global political and cultural ferment which was led in the main by the young, and in particular by students. From Nanterre to London, from Tokyo to Berkeley, on the streets of Paris and Belgrade the appearance was given of a generation in revolt. While those involved may have felt that theirs was indeed an epochal struggle, yet it is David Caute's analysis of the period 1968-70 as a cultural rather than a political revolution that represents orthodoxy among historians and cultural commentators: The revolutionary movements of 1967-69 marked, in one respect at least, a break with history: in a period of unprecedented material prosperity and cultural tolerance, the sons and daughters of the most privileged sections of the population rebelled. It was a moral revolt generated by "alienation" from dominant values, but it did not on the whole extend to the working class. (vii)
